Evolution of Esala Perahera
The Kandy Esala Perahera has evolved over centuries from traditional religious ceremonies into one of Sri Lanka’s most important cultural festivals. During the Kandyan Kingdom, its connection with the Sacred Tooth Relic became stronger, while the processions of the four Devales became an important part of the celebration. After the end of the monarchy, the Perahera continued as a community tradition. Today, it combines ancient rituals, Kandyan dancing, drumming, elephants and religious customs, attracting thousands of visitors while preserving Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
